Fluorspar is essential in nuclear energy as it serves as a fluxing agent in producing uranium hexafluoride (UF6), a key compound in the uranium fuel cycle. Its unique chemical properties also aid in uranium extraction and purification.
China, the largest fluorspar supplier, has now turned into a net importer of fluorspar with tightened export controls since 2018, contributing to supply chain challenges. This could potentially lead to a further increase in fluorspar prices, exacerbating the supply-demand imbalance.
